To achieve the shape of tourmaline, lapidarists must take great caution when cutting the stone, as faceting it incorrectly can easily affect the color. Tourmaline ranks 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Tourmalines are also the birthstone for October and are used to celebrate the 8th anniversary.
